crisis! at the blog
posted by the scholar on January 21st, 2008filed under: flotsam & jetsam
yesterday, the post i wrote a few weeks back about the packing tape art of mark khaisman made it to the front page of digg. all hell broke loose thereafter, in the form of broken servers and slow loading times, as 31,000+ 50,000+ people decided to head over here (mostly at the same time) to see what the fuss was about.

thanks to muhammed for digging my post, and thanks to you all for your patience if you were trying to come over and read or make a comment on sunday. people are still coming today from the article but the traffic levels are much more manageable now.

I live in fear of ever being dugg… Great concept but, like you said, all hell breaks loose when it happens! Congrats for riding out the storm.

Hey, it’s crises like these that are what make life interesting. Wow, 31,000+ people is REALLY impressive. My biggest day, so far has been about 900, so you go girl! By the way, you might want to check to make sure you don’t incur any penalties for all that traffic. I saw a Michael Ruhlman post a little while back where he said his bill was $6900 because of a huge spike in traffic. He worked it out but, YIKES! I hope being dugg brings higher steady traffic to your blog since you are the diva of design. New title. I coined it myself, right now.

hi everybody!
sosser – thanks, i am still trying to figure out if it was a good thing or not.
the site was broken for half the day and so was the technabob (we are linked on the same server), so the hubs was a tad grumpy.
bb – thanks, and living in fear is not a bad thing when it comes to digg. hmmm… i wonder if there is a solution in the worst case scenario handbook?
paula – it is cool that all those people came to visit on one day. i usually get that many in a whole month! and boy, am i glad to see you writing again, btw…
bri – i asked the hubs about getting penalized for the spike and he told me that we are on a fixed rate, so that is a relief. and you crack me up with this diva of design title.
