Hi Gigi: can you believe the idiots at Field’s covered these beauties up? I didn’t see them at all until a renovation in the late 80s/early 90s opened up the ceilings again in the atria.

hi el!
i don’t know what they were thinking. it is amazing what is underneath tatty linoleum and drywall in those old buildings.
i actually think they discovered daniel burnham’s fountain design back then too, and recreated it for their main floor.
it takes a village…
glad to see you (and will see you soon too)! 🙂

hi sosser,
well i am glad i’m not the only one. they should have never changed the name — it’s part of our city’s heritage!
thanks for letting me vent, and thanks for the visit too! 🙂

Wow that’s beautiful! I’ll bet it got covered in the 60’s. Too bad about the name change – yet another example of the globalization/corporatization of the entire world.

hi melinda,
isn’t it pretty? i don’t understand why anyone thought it should be covered up.
there actually is a VERY vocal group that pickets and actively boycotts macy’s due to the name change. i think a lot of chicagoans feel the same way even if they’re not on the picket line!
thanks for stopping by!
