sick as a dog
posted by the scholar on July 15th, 2008filed under: flotsam & jetsam
my dog kaiser had emergency spinal surgery on friday. he couldn’t walk on thursday and we took him to the vet, where they found a herniated disc in his neck. he had to have the surgery or he would become paralyzed. he is recovering but is unable to stand up or walk on his own, so i am a big time rehab nurse right now. there’s a lot of flipping and cleaning and laundering and grooming going on and neither of us are too thrilled about it, but i can see that slowly, with great effort and difficulty, he is getting better. because of this there likely will be sporadic posting this week, and i apologize for that.
right before he started to become immobile
thanks for your patience.

Oh, no. That’s so scary. I’m so glad he’s recovering. Poor pup!

Oh my goodness I was just wondering how he was doing YESTERDAY! Poor poor boy. What a spooky surgery too. I hope he’s a couch potato personality for your sake. Wow our Penny would not tolerate any immobilization like that, nor would old Alex. I know they know they’re hurting and don’t want to stress themselves but sometimes it’s hard to just relax and heal.
Here’s to a quick recovery. Poor baby.

my thoughts are with you and your pup! a friend’s dog had the same emergency surgery a few months back and, you’ll be glad to know, is doing fantastically now. both of you keep your chins up!

thank you, thank you everyone, for all your positive energy. we need it!
it’s only been two days but we are seeing improvement, and he is motivated to get up on his own even though he can’t, which is better than just being stuck and not moving.

Get well soon, pup!

thanks brian. he is trying to stand up now by himself without much success, but at least he is trying to do it on his own. 🙂

i haven’t read your blog in a while and only now found out about kaiser. it’s been almost two weeks since you wrote, so i am hoping he is as good as new by now. happy blogiversary, btw!

thanks ella, it has been two weeks and he is able to stand up and amble around with minimal assistance. next week i will be experimenting with leaving the house for a few hours at a time to see how it goes. wish me luck.
