dodge station pottery

my schedule is lightening a bit so i think i’ll be able to write a tad more this week, starting with the serene and simple wares from the napp family of wisconsin’s dodge station pottery. this stoneware collection is handmade of course, and frankly i would not be surprised a bit if the scenery surrounding them informs the work; they are situated in a bucolic village in central wisconsin. i am a big fan of unadorned dishware (letting the food on the plate be the show), and these pieces are as rustic and natural as can be.

glass and ceramics by jess wainer

i have got a few (not necessarily exciting) personal projects going on that are occupying my time, so i’ll only be writing sporadically for the next several weeks. in the meantime i hope you enjoy this ever-so-haunting glass and ceramic work from jess wainer. she is using a sgrafitto technique on the glass vases. very interesting.

american craft council show 2009, baltimore

between the economy and the horrid winter we are having, i need some serious inspiration right about now. i would love to go and check out these new mind-brightening pieces from nancy and burt over at the acc show in baltimore this weekend.

a few more of my favorite artists will be there too: jennifer cooke and her funky graphic textiles, the still life glass sculpture work of jen violette and some loverly jewelry from annie chau aka imogene.

if you are in the area, there is an admission fee to get in but it is well worth it; this show has some very beautiful things for sale! i encourage you to go and check it out. it’ll be open february 27-29, 2009. see more on the acc website and for more of spring inspiration, see nancy and burt’s website.

ky anderson paintings

it snowed again last night and it made me really depressed. these winter months with little light really set my teeth on edge and i am right about at the time of the year when i say that i can’t take it anymore. haven’t uttered it yet though. or maybe i did yesterday, i can’t remember. but i’m sitting here ignoring the bitter cold and putting off clearing the sidewalks around my house to focus on the pastoral tones in these abstract works in oil from brooklyn-based artist ky anderson instead. yes! what she paints is where i yearn to be in my mind – someplace where serene calm is peppered with bits of playful liveliness. yes, i need to be there right now.

ruth lyne glass

you may remember the talents of glass artist ruth lyne from the last time i wrote about her. she’s been busy in the kiln and has added some new larger scale panels of glass which are just as serene and beautiful as her tabletop collection.

if you are lucky enough to be in london you can view her collection with the cohesion glass network at the affordable art fair in battersea park, from march 12-15, 2009. the rest of us non-travelers can admire her work on her website. 🙂

ghostpatrol + cat rabbit = cool softie art

behold another brilliant art combo. i wish i could see this exhibition of softies entitled while you sleep, a collaboration 4 years in the making. cat rabbit has done the delightfully subversive sewing here, and ghostpatrol (seen here previously) has drawn the illustrations that inspired them.

if these two artists aren’t the same person, i think they should get married and have babies.

lucky australians (or tourist types) wandering around fitzroy in victoria can see them up close and personal at the gorker gallery from february 19 – march 8. so cool!
