threadless 101 for students

threadless_logo

this one is for all the educators out there. we all know how much fun threadless tee shirts are (in fact that last one i bought, pictured below, still cracks me up whenever i look at it). now, through a fun project called threadless 101, young people have a unique opportunity to be a part of all the fun. students (from middle school to college) are given an assignment to create an original design for a tee shirt. any and all specifications are up to the teacher. once the assignment is completed, designs are critiqued and voted for by the class, and the student with the highest score will be featured in the threadless newsletter and will also receive a gift certificate. additionally, once the winning design has been selected for the class, students can easily upload their design to the threadless site to be included in their regular design challenge to get their tee actually printed. if their design is selected, they will receive a $3,000 tax-free scholarship and $500 each time their tee-shirt is re-printed. there’s also a chance to win design of the year, where winners can collect an additional 20k. that’s a lot of benjamins (or hamiltons, depending on how you roll) to buy new tshirts and itunes, er, school supplies, with…

new work from rachel horrocks

you may remember the wonderfully tactile, inspired wall decor from uk designer rachel horrocks that i wrote about a while ago. rachel has continued to develop the concept of fun felty artwork with this new series called decoflora. still crafted from 100% wool felt like her basic baroque pieces, the decoflora series presents a more feminine style and attaches with a simple removable hook and loop on the wall, allowing you to place myriad unique patterns on your walls.

4 lovely colors of flowers are available in sets of 5, 10 or 20 pieces. prices start at £38. see more and contact rachel on her website.

ghostpatrol + cat rabbit = cool softie art

behold another brilliant art combo. i wish i could see this exhibition of softies entitled while you sleep, a collaboration 4 years in the making. cat rabbit has done the delightfully subversive sewing here, and ghostpatrol (seen here previously) has drawn the illustrations that inspired them.

if these two artists aren’t the same person, i think they should get married and have babies.

lucky australians (or tourist types) wandering around fitzroy in victoria can see them up close and personal at the gorker gallery from february 19 – march 8. so cool!

leah evans textiles

i truly enjoy map-related art, and this terrific topographical textile work from madison artist leah evans does not disappoint. leah says her pieces, which are constructed using applique and embroidery techniques among others, reflect the intimate expression of the language of maps as well as nonspecific, imagined landscapes. they are mysterious and intriguing and engage your eye for a good long while. also intriguing is the fact that leah’s interest in microbial worlds drew her to conclude that the satellite imagery and aerial photographs her map series is founded on look very similar to the bantam (and magnified) microbes, when scrutinized side by side.

the mark mothersbaugh home collection

frankly i think it is weird to say that devo frontman mark mothersbaugh has a home collection, but it is pretty clear that his avant musical talents are tantamount to his artistic skills. check out this sampling of graphic ceramic accessories, bold wallpaper and stylish rugs he’s made for his company walteria living.

from here it looks pretty edgy, urban and sometimes disturbing, but still very livable.

see the complete collection at walteria. learn more about mark’s music at his website.
