omG I love this work from Paris-based artist Tomasz Zarachowicz, aka Etsy seller ittichips. I love the colors, the styling, the whimsy, the surreal motifs, the floaty feeling I am getting the longer I stare at them. THese are prints from his original paintings.

ceramic urban gnomes by vitamin

London design house Vitamin has created a whole new way of dressing your modern garden with these urban gnomes. Made from bone china, they don’t possess the cheezy kitch the ubiquitous plastic kind has. They are much more sculptural and contemporary, which is either a relief or rather alarming, depending on your point of view…

These pieces if left in a leafy green garden will absolutely light up the night. I say two thumbs up.

Find the gnomes at Generate, and see more of Vitamin’s products on their website.

mr. wilson towel holder by loony design

I think this little suction cup wall hook, designed by Dominik Langhammer for Germany’s intriguing Loony Design, is terrifically useful as well as cute and hilarious. And the fact that its name is Mr. Wilson just makes me laugh even harder — so formal! As you can see, it’s made out of a tennis ball and has most excellent grommet eyes. The functional mouth serves to hold your hand towel, keychain, magic bean collection – or whatever else you think could fit in his mighty mouth.

FYI, Loony Design is a joint project of the Industrial Design degree course at the State Academy for Fine Arts in Stuttgart and the Evangelical Charitable Mission in Baden. Students from the Academy develop exclusive designs for everyday objects, which are produced by people with mental disorders living and working in centers run by the mission. That’s quite a provocative name for this venture if you ask me, but the collaboration has produced many other playful and functional design work.

Loony ships within Germany and also to other EU countries if you are over on the continent. If you’re in the States, try the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. And see a lot more for yourself right here on the Loony Design site.

regin igloria works on paper

Look at these energetic works on paper by Regin Igloria here. Regin focuses on nature themes and his relationship – both positive and negative – with the great outdoors, using, ink, graphite, gouache and acrylic to convey his stories. Having been an urban dweller most of my life, I can completely relate to the kind of mystique and reverence he has for bucolic surroundings, as well as the telltale signs of urban life that coexist within them, that I am seeing in these pieces.

erica sanders fabric collage

I am enjoying these fabric collages by Australian artist Erica Sanders for her line, little birdie. She uses vintage fabrics to tell personal childhood narratives by combining them on canvas. The bright colors and little stitching details remind me of my own childhood sewing projects, though they never were as nice as these.

I love these handmade eclecto notebooks designed by Janine Vangool from the Uppercase Gallery in Calgary. Beautifully detailed, there are 9 different appealing themes, like Peas and Carrots which contains imagery from vintage food magazines and cookbooks, or Near and Far, a travel journal filled with old maps and geography book pages. Since each piece is made from repurposed books and are peppered with vintage paper, no two are alike.

Beautiful, poetic work by Moldovan born, Los Angeles-based artist Stas Orlovski up now at Mixed Greens in New York, now through November 8th, 2008. I love the mysterious moody color selections and motifs, which leave me cold in a good way.
