although brooklyn’s cake is comprised of four industrial designers who work in a variety of materials, my eye naturally goes to their retro modern ceramic collection, and let me tell you i am liking it a lot.

the colors and shape of those cups are really perking me up too.
check them out at the supermarket and also see their website for more cool products.

look at this beautiful, functional glass collection from hudson beach glass. the four artists who make up this collective — john p. gilvey, wendy gilvey, michael benzer and jennifer smith — use several techniques, including casting the glass by hand and etching it for even more texture and depth. nature and the sea are influences, as you can see from the organic detailing they’ve included on these pieces.

purchase select pieces here and there, and see more of this sculptural collection on the hudson beach glass website.

these little log bowls from canadian artist doha chebib are so delightful. the simple lathe-turned pieces are reminiscent of basic woodworking, and the material naturally prompts quixotic thoughts of the canadian wilderness. they are finished with an acrylic stain, and of course no two are alike.

doha is a member of the loyal loot collective, a smallish group that features the design work of canadian women, both collaboratively and singly, in a variety of media. they strive to create designs with an honest, organic quality to them, so that the end user will derive increasing amounts of sentiment and meaning as time passes.
purchase them at show.

these stainless steel fruit and candy bowls from denmark’s philippi design remind me of a fabulous 1950’s mod spaceship that i would like to fly in, jetsons style.

founded by jan philippi in 1992, the philosophy behind this design house focuses on clear, modern simplicity. the contemporary point of view comes through consistently in all their pieces.

i even like the salt and pepper orbs and the, er, sugar pill bowl.
