right now i am wondering why i have an ugly blue plastic flashlight sitting my my utility drawer, when i could have something more stylish, like this castlight flashlight and candle holder from brooklyn designer david weeks instead? it’s got a rubberized grip, runs on three aaa batteries and emits light from bright led bulbs.

this would be so much easier to find if it’s sitting on your coffee table when the lights go out.
purchase this item for $40 right here, and look at david’s website for other cool stuff.

look at this cool bravit candle from christophe van bömmel for germany’s authentics. the arrangement of the wicks in the center of this paraffin candle forms a design that is visible through the wax. as the candle evolves through the various phases of burning, the design is traced by the burning wicks. depending on the pattern and size you select, you’ll see up to five different flames burning dramatically and transforming the original shape and size of the candle.

if you like spacing out while staring at candles, these pretty patterns might provide hours of entertainment.
purchase the bravits collection online at authentics. you can also find select pieces over at made in design and moss.

two thumbs up to this affordable (on sale right now for $7.99!) sandstone tealight holder. it’s 6″ in diameter and comes in white or black. i can picture a bunch of these on a mantel, casting off crazy circles of light on the walls right now.

find it at wrapables.

i like the wit and irony of new york designer harry allen, and think this candlestick would be fun to put out when you want to remember that one time those strolling musicians played that’s amore for you at the italian restaurant. it’s made of resin, and the silver is chrome plating on resin.

find them and other fun pieces at design public.

the folks over at germany’s opossum design have created the tae 1879, a sculptural oil lamp, as a tribute to thomas alva edison and the year he invented the electric light. i am admiring the wit, and the way the bulb seems to float so delicately within the glass hurricane cylinder.

when asked for an opinion about electricity in the late 1800’s, edison is believed to have said, “we will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles.” at the price of us $485, his comment is wholly appropriate, even today!
purchase it at vivre.

crazy about this mexi-moroccan inspired outdoor lantern from california’s notneutral, in a delectable color called persimmon.

they are designed to hold multiple candles for maximum light, and are a gorgeous way to light your table, backyard or pathway. i love those tiny, intricate light patterns they make.
purchase them in assorted colors at design public.

see this candle sconce? it’s made from old clay roof tiles from the pyrenees, in the 1860’s.

the coolest thing about these sconces (besides having rustic charm of course) is the way they were made. female workers created the distinctive tapered shape by folding sheets of clay over their thighs, so as thigh size varied, so did the tiles.
available through wisteria.

i’m heavily digging these oil lamps from the rocklite candle company. they’re handcrafted from real stones, and have multiple fiberglass wicks, which won’t need to be replaced.

the rocks are hand selected from tennessee’s cumberland plateau, pennsylvania’s appalachian mountain range, and mexico.

each stone is sealed to ensure durability and to prevent leakage. simply pour candle oil through the opening, insert the wick, light up and enjoy.

for indoor or outdoor use.
no two are alike, of course.
snatch ‘em up here.

i just got back from vacation and will be taking you on my californian odyssey later this week.

i am pretty pleased with what i shot. looking at them, even though i’m back into the thick of my bustling urban rut, is pleasing. the trees relax me. something about the dappled sunlight, and the rustling and the pinecones dropping. no other sound.

british designer sam johnson got inspired by those little trees used in architectural models, and has a terrific tealight that’ll inspire you to go on a camping trip. it’s crafted from brass and is chemically etched, then painted black.

once you convert it from a ninja star-looking, james bond gadget, and that candle is lit in the midst of the teeny woodland, you’ll have wonderful shadows to remind you of your last trip to the woods, or your next trip, every night!

buy it at charles & marie.
