look at these abstract graphic zeitgeist clocks from the creative duo of kerstin nill and sebastian pehl, aka mylumi. designed in an old fashioned flip style, these clocks present a bold new image every minute of the day — literally. there are 1440 different combinations. kerstin and sebastian describe this distinct styling they call typology as “avant-garde and visionary.”

i used to love those chalky pastel candy necklaces when i was a kid, and now i can have a permanent reminder of a favorite childhood memory with this silver and gold-plated necklace from the clever folks at atypyk.

i love the styling in this photo that makes it look like some of the “candies” have been eaten.

cool and clever chocolate-pencils

look at these terrific chocolate pencils used for enhancing desserts. they were a creative collaboration between renowned boutique patissier tsujiguchi hironobu and architect oki sako for his company nendo. the set includes chocolate of varying intensity and comes with a special “sharpener” to put as little or as many shavings you like on your sweet treat!

nendo_chocolate_pencils

nendo_chocolate_pencils_2

nendo_chocolate_pencils_3

someone clever needs to make a (tuile cookie or meringue) dessert that looks like “crumpled” pieces of “paper” that is sitting in a (cookie cup) “trash can” with the shavings sitting on the very top of the pile.

or you could just sharpen in onto your cake. whatever works best.

sadly, this special item is only available in japan right now. the best place to find it is in one of tsujiguchi’s shops in tokyo.

swiss-born multidisciplinary designer and artist chrissy angliker is a recent pratt grad who has created (among many other clever things) these boldly graphic measuring tape pendant lamps.

i can imagine the soft glow emitted from their tightly handcoiled shades, and love the idea of these in a craft room (duh) or a little vestibule or foyer. what a cool thing to come home to!

the lamps can be seen at the los angeles branch of the permanently cool reform school. but you can also order them from her directly: $100 for the black and white light, $120 for the yellow and $130 for the multicolored. be sure to check out her great portfolio too while you are over there!

miron lior conceal bookshelf for umbra

i know that you know that i don’t like furniture with footprints - are you sick of hearing me say that? well i have to say it one more time. i love this clever conceal bookshelf from brooklyn designer miron lior for umbra. it’s made of powder coated steel and hangs simply on the wall with the included hardware. there are two tiny hooks that will hold the bottom book cover in place, to give the illusion that a stack of books is floating on the wall.

miron_lior_umbra_conceal_book_shelf

miron_lior_umbra_conceal_book_shelf_2

miron created this piece at the pratt institute and was a winner of the competition that umbra held for student design in 2005. a portion of the price goes back to pratt, so you’re shopping for a good cause!

this design is superior to the sticklebook shelf in my humble opinion, because you are able to keep the crisp straight lines intact on this shelf. i think stickle looks a little sloppy unless everything is hanging extremelyclose together.

they’re very affordable too - us $14 for the large size 5.5 x 7 x 6.5″ (14 x 18 x 17 cm) and $10.50 for the small one 5.25 x x 5.5″ (13 x 13 x 14 cm). purchase them right here.

fun fomato greeting cards

check out these very humorous illustrations and graphic text greeting cards from the creative los angeles stationer called fomato. the creative force behind these whimsical illustrations and witty stories woven into the sentiments prefers to remain anonymous, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy these cards, many in three or four panel versions, and little badges too! (ed. note: sorry if the bigger cards are tough to read - hopefully you can see some of the stories in the close ups…)

i love the style and the bold colors. for me though the intriguing (and hilarious) stories on the longer cards are the hook. i would love to see a print series or a continuing serial of some kind with these wacky characters, since they make me smile so much.

see the full complement on the fomato website. they’ll have an online shop sometime this fall, but in the meantime you can purchase these terrific cards at black ink (boston), zipper (los angeles), magma (london), hazel or paper doll (chicago) and posman books (new york).
