i saw this simple and handpainted porcelain and dish set on cribcandy the other day and decided to investigate. such beautiful minimal design! turns out, new york-based artist re jin lee, or rj, is not just a ceramic artist but also a wonderful illustrator. and her strong linework is less minimal and more robust to me. a very fine combination if there ever was one.

see rj at her website or at her etsy and dawanda shops.

although brooklyn’s cake is comprised of four industrial designers who work in a variety of materials, my eye naturally goes to their retro modern ceramic collection, and let me tell you i am liking it a lot.

the colors and shape of those cups are really perking me up too.
check them out at the supermarket and also see their website for more cool products.

i wake up every morning and with very little exception i pour myself a cup of iced coffee in my guy michael davis porcelain cup in green. i will do this until i break all four that I have purchased or move onto the next life, whichever comes first. it makes me so happy to start my day like this, so i went with that feeling and found some fun cups and mugs that would start or end anyone’s day with style…

more striking ceramics from london-born, los angeles based ceramic artist hannah morrow. these pieces are made of bone china. the stickers collection is a tribute to ceramic souvenirs while the unadorned hedy collection simply celebrates purity of form.

those simple shapes are very inviting and would definitely encourage me to linger over a meal…
see more and purchase it all on hannah’s website.

i like this paon collection of simple porcelain bathroom accessories, from kazuhiko tomita for germany’s authentics. i like the simplicity and organic style (and the fact that they have elephant trunks doesn’t hurt either).

coming in march to unica home, but they’re taking orders now!

ever have one of those days when you need three cups of coffee? even if you’re limiting your caffeine intake, you could still get it done with one cup instead in this fun porcelain coffee cup from rhode island’s fred and friends.

i love it when the coffee cups in my cabinets are more clever in the morning than i am!
purchase this and other fun things on fred’s website.

i miss new york. there was a time when i was there 4-6 times a year for business and it felt like my second home. i haven’t been back for a few years now. i miss slipping seamlessly into the tension and the grit and complexion of the city and the streams of people rushing past me on the sidewalk in midtown and quiet moments on neighborhood streets in chelsea when there wouldn’t be a soul around. i miss the odd smell of the subway air and how my feet would ache at the end of the day, from walking and walking and walking uptown crosstown downtown. i miss the narrow streets of the village and the neighborhood shops on the upper west side. i miss the cab drivers asking me if i wanted to take the triboro bridge or the midtown tunnel from laguardia and knowing exactly where i would end up depending on what my answer was. i miss riverside drive and pommes frites and the cupcake cafe and the mud truck.
but i can always remind myself of the good times and laugh a little bit when i look the brooklynese collection from one of my favorite shops, fishs eddy.

amusing! but i still think a trip is in order soon.
purchase them all right here.

i like this clever take on the ubiquitous paper coffee cup we see in my hands on a regular basis. this “paper” cup from rhode island company decor craft is actually made of double walled porcelain, and has a silicone lid. it’s dishwasher safe and earth friendly too.

the only issue here is that decor craft is a wholesaler and does not list the retailers who carry their line. i think anne mcgilvray is the rep in chicago, but any retailer info out there would be appreciated!

n.b. this is a week long series on methods of transport and how we feel about them, created by a dear friend.
i love my car. it is spacious and comfortable. i’m also an excellent driver (i think i have mentioned this before). sometimes if i have displaced anxiety i get just a soupçon of road rage, but most of the time driving actually relaxes me. i frequently picture myself on long country roads, or on highway one in california, with no particular destination or time frame in mind, with my favorite music playing…
