amuse bouche jewelry by blue poppy

in the food world, an amuse bouche is a tiny bite-sized morsel served before the hors d’œuvre or first course of a meal. they serve to tickle the taste buds, are representative of the chef’s culinary style and prepare you for the rest of the meal. now, can you imagine what an amuse bouche for would look like in jewelry form? wonder no more!
look at these fabulous amuse bouche rings from california artists jill redman and erin lockwood for their blue poppy jewelry line. they’re made of actual spices (like cloves, cayenne and wasabi on the left side below) that are encased in resin and then inlaid with teeny drops of sterling silver by hand (of course).

beautiful flowing color + organic shapes + fun talking point for your next dinner party = two thumbs up!
they also have spice earrings in an extensive color palette, just in case you’d like to complete your ensemble.
purchase the rings at uncommon goods, and be sure to see jill and erin’s website for more inspiring excitement.

i am extremely fond of the work of prolific california artist dan goodsell and his food themed motley crew of characters that have sprung from his fount of imagination. this happy roving gang features the irrepressible mr. toast and his homies, like shaky bacon, lemonhead and joe the egg. they join each other and support each other as friends do, together at milestone moments or just chilling out.

warning! love fest: i love his sense of humor and the super smiley color palette. the simplicity of his drawings evokes a lot of joy. i love how kids and adults alike can have a shared laugh when viewing his artwork. i love seeing food as everyday people in unexpected places. i love how he has made these art pieces available in all types of ways - original paintings, online comics, plush toys, buttons, books and cards. and i love being a collector of his work.
this kind of whimsical imagination is like a giant magnet to me. i can’t help but put myself right alongside these instantly beloved characters and be part of the gang. i’m thinking i’m an eggplant. or something else purple. maybe a fig?
right now my mr. toast doll is looking at me and winking.
be sure to check out dan’s flickr stream, blog and etsy shop - there is so much quality content that you’ll be quickly immersed! and don’t miss the archive of vintage photos and advertising too!
you can also find select merchandise of dan’s at mahar dry goods.

i’m weird about cooking and i’ll tell you why. i enjoy working in the kitchen and consider making meals to be a wonderful creative outlet as well as an expression of love. my favorite time to do this is during the home nesting months of late fall through early spring. for reasons unbeknownst to me though, i suffer a strange kind of burnout, like clockwork. every year without fail i wake up one day, and suddenly the joy i find in my culinary creativity feels like a chore overnight. and then i quit doing it for a while. weird, huh?
right now, though, my husband is rubbing his hands together and clicking his heels up because it’s cooking time, and looky what i made with some beautiful fresh eggs from my friend el’s organic garden (or should i say chicken coop?)!

peanut butter chocolate chip cookies
spinach and jack quiche
a big shout out to verloe and all the other hens that made this moment possible.

beloved readers, you may find the little snippets about my life to be a tad dull, but hey, for me this is a creative outlet and a place to seek inspiration and a space to get personal. is that not the essence of the interweb? anyway, today i will tell you that when i was a youngster, i went to a small school where i was the only asian kid. in the whole school. and i can’t really even call myself asian, i am a halfsie pacific islander, being a happy-go-lucky filipino half the time! knowing i was the only one there made it a surreal experience at times, especially when kids would try and guess what nationality i was. i wonder if the reaction would have been the same if this wonderful illustrated book from colorado artist anna woltz had been available then. anna has created a playful soft cover illustrated book and toddler tees which feature a multicultural culinary alphabet lesson for her company, wondertoast. check it out:

i think this is such a terrific way to engage a child’s curiosity while educating them about food and other cultures. maybe if these had been around back in the day, i wouldn’t have been bombarded with that pesky “are you hawaiian?” question all the time. and i actually think the whole alphabet featured as a fun oversized print would be a marvelous piece of art in a kid’s room, or anyone’s kitchen for that matter.
thank you so much for the photos, anna!
buy her adorable and very affordable items at wondertoast, and find anna on her art blog or baby blog.
