okay, okay, one last blast with the upcycling and then i will be quiet. look at the beautiul details of these folksy mosaic fish from michigan artist john unger. they’re carefully and obsessively made of bottle caps, with select metal accents.

purchase the fish and see more sustainable design work at john’s etsy shop. be sure to check his blog out too for much, much more!

i appreciate seeing recycled elements in art, don’t you? talented michigan artist mark orr definitely does. he uses interesting found objects and salvaged architectural pieces to create these wonderful wooden sculptures. ravens are very intelligent birds who (like me) are attracted to shiny things to decorate their nests. for mark, they represent the scavenger of found goods from his past.

i love the inviting energy they give, and love seeing all the unexpected objects that are incorporated into his collection.
purchase these and other pieces through mark’s website. he is also available for custom work.

i’m weird about cooking and i’ll tell you why. i enjoy working in the kitchen and consider making meals to be a wonderful creative outlet as well as an expression of love. my favorite time to do this is during the home nesting months of late fall through early spring. for reasons unbeknownst to me though, i suffer a strange kind of burnout, like clockwork. every year without fail i wake up one day, and suddenly the joy i find in my culinary creativity feels like a chore overnight. and then i quit doing it for a while. weird, huh?
right now, though, my husband is rubbing his hands together and clicking his heels up because it’s cooking time, and looky what i made with some beautiful fresh eggs from my friend el’s organic garden (or should i say chicken coop?)!

peanut butter chocolate chip cookies
spinach and jack quiche
a big shout out to verloe and all the other hens that made this moment possible.

i happened across the picture-perfect peachbelt studio gallery in michigan recently while vacationing with a dear friend. it’s housed in an old rural brick schoolhouse (the oldest existing one room school in the county) that dates to 1867 and is listed in the michigan register of historic places. while i was there i saw the intimate bronze and ceramic sculpture work of local artist jill lareaux.

beautiful things here.

see more sculpture (and lovely oil paintings from dawn stafford too!) on the peachtree gallery’s website.
