i am falling into the delicious, foreboding abyss of these dynamic large scale (up to 8′ x 8′!) works by california artist nellie king solomon. it’s an extraordinary swirling, sweeping style which to me is not unlike the beginnings of a tornado. the way the blacks kick out on the surfaces is dramatic but grounding too. nellie, who uses a combination of materials including acrylic, soda ash, coffee, house paint, ink and dye, says she paints things she knows are there but cannot be seen.

look at the interesting details in this mixed media artwork by russian born, new york based artist mira alibek. abstract patterns, images and symbols, created with markers and silkscreens, all converge into richly layered artworks, built around the ideas of deterioration and reconstruction, convergence and separation.

graphically compelling.

i don’t know about you, but whenever i’ve gone to a slightly-cold-but-modern-and-trendy hotel or restaurant, i frequently spot striking 15 foot tall curtains that divide the rooms and really set a sophisticated tone for the joint. they are too cool for school (school being my house in this example) but boy do i love looking at them! these huge swaths of fabric really are not fabric at all, but actually supremely chic metal mesh materials, just like these examples from the massachusetts company whiting and davis. they began making chain mail by hand back in the early 1900’s, and have since developed a machine technique to create large swaths of the stuff for residential, fashion and industrial purposes. the material comes in aluminum, brass, and stainless steel in a rich tones of silver, gold, platinum, and bronze. if your needs are more specific, three of the patterns can be enameled in a pantone color especially for you!
if you’re looking for a way to create drama and glamour in a room, i do believe this will help.
ed note: it’s been a dog’s age since i posted something luxe up in here. it feels pretty good!

new york artist alyssa ettinger makes very special hand-thrown and slip-cast pottery. there is something so opulent in the simplicity of her designs.

her beautiful knitwear line is available in four soothing colors, as well as several different “stitches.”

it’s made of porcelain, and is casual enough to mix and match with ease.

her serene mieko bowls are named after a friend who inspired her to return to pottery after a successful career in magazine photo styling, and also authoring a book entitled the eBay home makeover.

since all of alyssa’s pottery is hand-thrown, and fired at different times, sizes and colors will vary slightly, which only adds to the beauty of her collection.

i love how it looks like she just pressed her sleeves into the clay before it was dry!
