what a beautiful light by dutch designer jo meesters. it looks more like a substantial credenza or other piece of furniture from the way it is crafted. made of wood, 8,000 holes have been carefully drilled and plugged with resin so that when lit from within, the pattern resembles low growing trees.

what a gorgeous, glowing room divider this would make, on or off.

i needed a laugh today and i got it in new zealand designer phil cuttance’s jocular (and functional!) resin animal hangers, a twist on the idea (and continuing trend) of traditional animal head trophies. in phil’s interpretation, the fronts and the backs of the animals are equally important to display.

the hangers are sold in sets of two for $50 at charles and marie. choose from hippo, moose or giraffe styles. teehee.
see more design work from phil on his website.

in the food world, an amuse bouche is a tiny bite-sized morsel served before the hors d’œuvre or first course of a meal. they serve to tickle the taste buds, are representative of the chef’s culinary style and prepare you for the rest of the meal. now, can you imagine what an amuse bouche for would look like in jewelry form? wonder no more!
look at these fabulous amuse bouche rings from california artists jill redman and erin lockwood for their blue poppy jewelry line. they’re made of actual spices (like cloves, cayenne and wasabi on the left side below) that are encased in resin and then inlaid with teeny drops of sterling silver by hand (of course).

beautiful flowing color + organic shapes + fun talking point for your next dinner party = two thumbs up!
they also have spice earrings in an extensive color palette, just in case you’d like to complete your ensemble.
purchase the rings at uncommon goods, and be sure to see jill and erin’s website for more inspiring excitement.

i like these fun retro collages with acrylic mounted on wood, from chicago’s david van alphen for his netherland art. there is something so rich about their simplicity to me. i also like his color choices and the new modern context that comes through this nostalgic imagery when he isolates and enhances them.

david’s works are currently on display at the dva gallery, the gallery he owns right on lincoln avenue in the city! be sure to check out his flickr stream too if you want to see more.

a lovelier thing i don’t believe i have ever seen, perhaps? these gorgeous paintings and jewelry from seattle artist (by way of north carolina) faryn davis for her fernworks are mind boggling. faryn incorporates wood, resin, paint and wax with assorted ephemera to create a truly unique collection of art objects and jewelry. she has a bfa from the university of north carolina, and considers herself to be a master collector of small things. some of her more recent pieces are slightly out of focus, an influence that comes from the foggy, mysterious essence and conditions of the pacific northwest.

i really hope you can see the laborious details in these pieces. when i spoke with faryn at the fair she mentioned that her work is difficult to photograph, which i found to be true. i can only describe with words the depth these pieces have, filled with bits of found objects and color, all with a consistently quiet, pensive theme or energy.
the soul they have goes without saying.
more appealing things on her website.
