i absolutely love these stoneware pears from etsy seller therunnybunny. i love that blue color called pool.

can’t you just imagine a big bowl full of these on a dining table? while we contemplate that, let’s continue on: perhaps on the opposite end of the spectrum from the same seller are these fabulously odd animal-human combination and animal-animal figurines. they are created using vintage slip cast molds.

i really like the details on that bird lady right now.

although brooklyn’s cake is comprised of four industrial designers who work in a variety of materials, my eye naturally goes to their retro modern ceramic collection, and let me tell you i am liking it a lot.

the colors and shape of those cups are really perking me up too.
check them out at the supermarket and also see their website for more cool products.

i do not frequently show non-functional ceramic art but i make the exception here for the minimally dynamic collection from uk artist rachel grimshaw. these slab-built pieces were inspired by architecture and natural forms found in arid desert areas, and are crafted from unglazed stoneware. i love the way the gritty textured pieces push and pull so nicely together.

see more works from rachel here.

do you know this about me already? i’ve got a thing for birds. my friends called me the crow in high school, since i was (and still am) attracted to shiny things. i am a secret city birdwatcher now, everyday. and when i am in michigan the neighbors must think i’m nuts, because the bitchin’ binoculars that my husband gave me for my birthday last year seem to be permanently attached to my face on the weekends we are there. now, imagine my delight to find these beautiful hand built raku-fired ceramic birds from portland artist sian alexander’s platykoalabird shop!

i love the brilliant colors she has used against the rough textured, oxidized look of the raku. very cool.
yes, the last photo had turtles. but they call me the turtle on the tennis court, so they’re in like flynn.
purchase them all right here and be sure to see the multitalented sian’s blog too. it looks like she makes a mean pastry as well.

i am enjoying the happy colors and stories told in minnesota artist kelly newcomber’s art. kelly is inspired by a multitude of things electronic, and expresses their usefulness and collected poise in paintings, prints and lively little stoneware sculptures painted with acrylics. i am enjoying the everyday objects interconnected with larger human ideas, and the randomness that all seems to make sense in these pieces. there’s science and technology and astronomy - and love - all bundled up here into irresistible, vivid packages.

i love the idea of these prints in a kid’s room (and wish for those sculptures on the sideboard in my living room!). there is something so very appealing about those little sculpture guys. that chocolate keypad reminds me of a blackberry device (or something else of that ilk) to keep track of yourself on.
now, if those pdas would appeal like these pieces do in real life, we’d really be cooking with crisco!
if you’re passing through new mexico, be sure to stop by the roswell museum and art center to see the artist-in-residence alumni show that kelly is participating in, now through january 13, 2008. if you can’t make it to the desert southwest, see kelly’s website for her portfolio and visit her etsy shop to purchase these lovely items and more!

look at this absolutely lovely stoneware from baltimore husband and wife artists shawna pincus and mike bracco from spaghetti kiss. shawna focuses on ceramics and has a bfa from the maryland institute college of art. she fires the pieces to cone 6, adds and removes glazes, and the appealing texture is achieved by pressing found objects into the clay before it is dry.

i have to confess i was so obsessed with these ceramics at the fair that it would seem like i missed mike’s apparel, but i must mention it too! the images are drawn by hand of course, and screened onto soft cotton tees:
mike has also created a graphic novel called birth that will soon be available in comic stores near you.
quite a talented couple, and oh! did i mention that shawna has a blog?
