these acrylic tiles from the natural decor collection of italy’s archeoceramica intrigue me. i love that they’re embedded with organic materials (no, i couldn’t possibly tire of that), and the idea of a large surface covered in them, actually a single pour, like this table. these tiles are suitable for a backsplash, counter or floor, and are more durable than other traditional materials.

not to put too fine a point on it, but i would love to see them expand their selection to include some materials that i couldn’t buy at a chain craft supply store in any city. how about ginko or lemon leaves or ivory buttons and spools?
i do love this idea though (and those shells!).

i already love new mexico artist erin adams’ fantastic glass mosaics, because she has an eclectic aesthetic, and enjoys fusing urban influences with whimsical folk art style.
however, i’m even more bonkers about her newest collection, the gorgeous, earth conscious luna tiles. these sandblasted aluminum and glass tiles are created from recycled materials, in collaboration with alumillenium tile of mexico.

erin pays close attention to the roles that color and shape play as design elements. all aluminum used is recycled, and the oil used to heat up the metal during production is recycled from automobiles. each material highlights the unique character of the other, creating a harmonious sensory experience of sight and touch.
available in 36 colors and 3 finishes, to accommodate a wealth of tastes.

okay, so i’m an earth person, and it’s obvious that i have an affinity for clay. i’ll feature some other artists doing cool things in other media this week… but i just had to feature these exquisite mosaic works from washington artist clare dohna!

clare became enamorate of mosaics when a life-size piece she was working on blew up in the kiln. she glued her sculpture back together and afterwards, liked the way it looked.

clare cuts her mosaic tiles by hand, one by one. she then fires them, paints her glazes on, and fires again, cuerda seca style.

the mosaic tiles are set onto a base of concrete or clay, and then grouted and sealed.

of course she does custom work.

a limited selection of garden art is available at dig in vashon.
for more info, photos and to purchase clare’s work, click here.
n.b., she just taught a sold out mosaic class at dig this past weekend — maybe she’ll do another?!

see this candle sconce? it’s made from old clay roof tiles from the pyrenees, in the 1860’s.

the coolest thing about these sconces (besides having rustic charm of course) is the way they were made. female workers created the distinctive tapered shape by folding sheets of clay over their thighs, so as thigh size varied, so did the tiles.
available through wisteria.
