i am here on the hazy hot outer banks of north carolina in a rented beach house with friends this week, and i am going to do my best to see if i can find these recycled trash fish in the ocean. i probably won’t find them though, since they’re from the mind (and local dumpsters) of california artist rodney rodrigo mccoubrey.

as you can see i really like the ones with identifiable labels.
see these pieces and swim around his website here.

california artist michele pred creates three dimensional sculpture work out of confiscated items she has collected over the last five years from airport security checkpoints at the san francisco international airport. she collected these items to express the disruption we have felt in our everyday lives since the 9/11 attacks in a visual way. the works are open to interpretation of course, and to michele they represent the “arbitrary intrusion of disorder and all that is now lost and unrecoverable.”

what do they symbolize to you?
michele will be exhibiting her work in a solo chow at the john michael kohler arts center from june 15th - october 12th, 2008. if you can’t get there in person you can see her most excellent collection on her website.

look at this witty and gently surreal dear deer wall piece. simply place branches in the holes of the wooden plaque to achieve the same effect (sort of) as a majestic chopped head of the real thing! it’s created by austrian designer bernhard grafl for walking chair design studio and comes in solid oak in your choice of light or dark stain.

i bucked the deer trend (!) that continues to remain quite popular, but actually this is one of the most clever interpretations i have seen. and to be frank, this appeals to me much more than a big ol’ head hanging on a wall.
purchase the dear deer for € 25(about us $39) right here.

i like this lovely looking laser cut steel manimani clock, from multi-disciplinary uk designer brendan young for his studiomold company. it was inspired by the outline of a handful of antique clock parts that were dropped onto the floor.

loose and fun, and i like the industrial edge in the rusty finish.
purchase this piece (in five different colors and two different sizes!) and see more truly gorgeous product designs at the studiomold website, and view more work on brendan’s (and his design partner vanessa battaglia’s) design website.

this may be a very site specific thing, but nevertheless a cool thing. behold the ceramic wall from high end italian tile company naxos! to me it is more of a gigantic sculpture than a wall, but it will help to define your spaces and create vertical interest. choices include square, ring and shape (more like a sharp square) patterns, silver or gold frame structure and a limited but luscious color palette which includes a burnt orange and a dusty plum.

i love the mid-century rounded geo shapes, and the fact that it is handcrafted clay just makes me want to run my hands all over it.

i enjoy bold graphics, so i really like all the wall decals that are floating around the universe right now, because it gives you a relatively inexpensive and noncommittal way to add drama to your interiors. i am especially infatuated with this knitting hands wall decal from barcelona’s witty miraentuinterior - and i don’t even knit! of course if i put this up in my soon-to-be-converted craft room, maybe that would change…

it’s offered in 24 different colors on their website, and you can see from up above that you also have the option of placing a variety of background colors behind the graphic to help visualize it on your own wall.
truth be told, all their designs are super cool.

some of my friends have a hard time picking around in junk shops or discount department stores. not me. i could spend hours in those places hunting and digging for precious treasures, because you never know. i find this pleasing hobby/vocation even more delicious thanks to the invention of the internet, and a little thing called ebay. every once in a while i crash into beautifully made art and craft and today was one of those days. behold the gorgeous glass work from ohio artist darren goodman, aka dirwood. he has a bfa in glass blowing from bowling green state university, and since graduating in 2004 has dedicated himself to his craft. he currently operates his own hot glass studio near cincinnati, where he turns out marvelous pieces like these:

the pointillist/painterly mosaic pieces come from his “end of day” glass, i.e., leftover color chips that dirwood combines together, with a bit of gold adventurine thrown in for the sparkle. all pieces are hand blown and signed.
dirwood does beautiful custom orders too.
find him on his website and see a large gallery of work (don’t miss the tower!), or shop his store on ebay.
